I offer the following coaching services for writers:
Initial discussion
I start with a free 20-minute telephone consultation to see how I can help you, if you’re ready to write your book, and if we’re a good fit for each other. And of course you can ask any questions you may have. If you’d like to go ahead, we can book your first session.
You can get in touch with me by phone on +44 (0) 7930 568516 or email me at
Session One: Getting Started (90 minutes):
This is about the big picture and we’ll discuss the following:
Concept
Motivation
Target reader
Structure
Deadline
Publishing options
What’s next?
You may find you can get going straight away. We can do another session if you want more guidance.
Session Two: Step by Step – 60 minutes
Introduction – what to include to get the book started.
Chapter One: chapter titles, headings, sub-headings and other key elements. How to begin a chapter, the main body, and the conclusion.
Then what?
Well, if you haven’t already done so, you need to start writing. That’s right. It’s time to get going! Once you’ve written the introduction and chapter one, I’ll ask you to send it to me for what’s known as a developmental edit.
Developmental Editing – looking at the big picture and the detail
I recommend we take this chapter by chapter. You may go through several drafts, but that’s ok, it’s all part of the process.
Like any personal project, you’re likely to be too close to it to be aware of any necessary changes. And most authors are understandably protective of their writing.
I will look at each one and give you detailed feedback. I’ll check that your:
structure supports the ideas and is easy to follow
content is relevant and clear, and I’ll tell you if you need to develop or shorten a particular section
sentences and paragraphs are logical and congruent
writing style engages the reader
So, I’ve written quite a lot. Now what?
If you plan to approach a publisher you’ll need to write an introduction and one or two chapters.
You’ll also need to put a proposal and letter/email together which I can help you with.
If you are self-publishing you’ll need to write the lot.
Once the manuscript is complete, it will need to go to a copy-editor, jacket designer, typesetter, printer, and proofreader. I can recommend all the relevant people.
What if I need to run something by you?
Lots of my clients need to do this. You may:
want to discuss the changes I made during the developmental edit
be in resistance and unable to write
want some reassurance
need to clarify something
feel you want to change topic
You can purchase a half hour session or more if you need to. I’m always there for you - that’s the partnership element. You don’t have to use the time all at once either.
Are sessions face-to-face or by phone?
I recommend we do the first session face-to-face, geography permitting, because it sets the scene for your book. And because it’s nice to put a face to a name.
All subsequent sessions are by phone.
Meetings are held at:
John Lewis in Kingston
The Dysart Arms in Richmond
5th View at Waterstone’s, Piccadilly
I can do sessions by phone if none of these places are convenient.
